What is AVIF?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an open, royalty-free raster image format specified by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). It encapsulates AV1-encoded still images inside the standardized ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF) container. Originally derived from the video compression advancements in the AV1 video codec, AVIF leverages advanced intra-frame spatial prediction, transform block partitioning, and in-loop filtering to achieve significantly higher compression efficiency than legacy photographic formats.
Modern desktop and mobile browsers, including Chromium, Firefox, and Safari, provide native decoding support for AVIF images. This makes it an effective modern replacement for standard web graphics where high visual fidelity and low bandwidth consumption are required simultaneously.
AVIF and Other Image Formats
Every image format has distinct architectural trade-offs. The choice between AVIF, JPEG, PNG, and WebP depends on your specific requirements:
AVIF vs. JPEG
Traditional JPEG uses 8-bit discrete cosine transform compression without alpha transparency support. AVIF supports high dynamic range (HDR), wide color gamuts (WCG), and up to 10-bit or 12-bit color depth, mitigating color banding in skies and gradients while retaining crisp edges at lower file sizes.
AVIF vs. WebP
WebP is built on VP8 intra-frame prediction and is virtually universally supported. AVIF is built on AV1, offering superior compression efficiency on complex textures, fine gradients, and photographic backgrounds, though AV1 encoding requires higher computational processing during creation.
AVIF vs. PNG
PNG is strictly a lossless DEFLATE-compressed format ideal for pixel-perfect user interface diagrams and screenshots. AVIF can store lossless data, but its primary strength lies in lossy compression that preserves sharp alpha transparency masks while dramatically shrinking photographic file sizes.
Multi-Frame & Animation
While GIF is limited to an indexed 256-color palette and produces heavy animated files, both AVIF and WebP support true-color multi-frame animation sequences with synchronized frame delays and modern compression filters.
Transparency and Image Quality
Proper alpha channel handling is essential to avoid unwanted visual artifacts when transitioning between formats:
- Transparency Preservation: When converting images with transparency into AVIF, PNG, or WebP, ScanPDF preserves the 8-bit RGBA alpha mask so cutout objects and transparent backdrops composite smoothly against any page background.
- Deliberate JPEG Flattening: The JPEG format specification does not define an alpha channel. To prevent transparent pixels from collapsing into unexpected solid black backgrounds, transparent areas are composited onto a clean, solid white background before encoding.
- Encoder Quality Control: The quality slider maps directly to the underlying AVIF/JPEG/WebP encoder quantification tables (ranging from 10 to 100). Balanced settings around 75 provide visually indistinguishable compression, while 90+ retains pristine high-frequency details.
When AVIF is Useful
AVIF provides practical advantages in several modern digital production scenarios:
<picture> element, enabling capable browsers to fetch the most compact asset while providing WebP or JPEG fallbacks for legacy clients.
Conversion Limitations
When converting between raster formats, keep the following technical considerations in mind:
- Lossy Generational Loss: Converting from one lossy format to another (such as JPG to AVIF, or AVIF to JPG) performs a re-encode pass. While visually faithful at high quality settings, each re-encoding step recalculates transform matrices.
- Content Entropy and File Size: The resulting file size is inherently determined by the visual complexity of your image. Photographic images with soft gradients compress substantially better than high-frequency noise patterns or synthetic pixel art.
- Legacy Platform Compatibility: Older desktop applications, outdated email clients, and legacy operating systems without AV1 codec support may require conversion to standard PNG or JPG for offline distribution.
