Rotation Mechanics & Page Range Control
ScanPDF performs non-destructive page rotation via PyMuPDF. Here are the exact parameters governing lossless metadata updating and page range selection:
Lossless Dictionary Modification
Rotates pages by modifying the internal /Rotate dictionary entry. Vector typography, searchable text, hyperlinks, and embedded images remain 100% losslessly preserved.
Orthogonal Angles (90°, 180°, 270°)
Supports standard 90° clockwise, 180° upside-down inversion, and 270° clockwise (90° counter-clockwise). Arbitrary angles (e.g. 45°) are not permitted by PDF specifications.
Selective Page Range Targeting
Rotate all pages at once or provide comma-separated page ranges (e.g., 1, 3, 5-7). Unselected pages remain in their original orientation with compact stream deflation.
Technical Questions & Answers
Verified answers regarding PDF page rotation angles, quality, and limitations.
Does rotating a PDF degrade image quality or rasterize selectable text?
No. ScanPDF rotates pages by modifying the /Rotate metadata key in each page's dictionary object (setting it to 90, 180, or 270 degrees). It does not decompress, re-render, or re-encode vector streams, embedded fonts, or image data, making the rotation completely lossless.
Can I rotate only specific pages rather than the whole document?
Yes. You can rotate all pages at once or specify a custom comma-separated page selection such as '1, 3, 5-8'. Only the specified pages will be rotated by your selected angle, leaving other pages in their original orientation.
What rotation angles are supported?
The tool supports 90 degrees clockwise, 180 degrees (upside down correction), and 270 degrees clockwise (equivalent to 90 degrees counter-clockwise). Arbitrary free-form rotation angles (such as 15 or 45 degrees) are not supported because the PDF standard requires orthogonal 90-degree increments.
Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?
Encrypted PDFs cannot be modified on the server without authorization. You must first decrypt the document using ScanPDF's Unlock PDF tool before uploading it for page rotation.
