Understanding Unit Conversion: Same Quantity, Different Expression
A unit conversion does not alter the physical reality of an object or phenomenon. It simply translates the measurement into a different standardized system of reference. When you state that a road segment measures 12.5 kilometres or 7.77 miles, the physical distance traveled by a vehicle is completely identical—only the numeric magnitude and the reference unit change.
Most standard physical quantities rely on a direct linear relationship tied to a base unit (such as the International System of Units metre or kilogram). When translating between imperial and metric systems, the software maps your input to this internal base standard first, then applies the reciprocal scalar ratio to express the final value in your selected destination unit.
Why Temperature Conversion Cannot Use Simple Multiplication
Most standard physical units—such as metres to feet or kilograms to pounds—share a common absolute origin: zero metres equals zero feet. Because of this common origin, converting between them requires only a direct scalar multiplier factor ($y = k \cdot x$).
Temperature scales do not share a common zero point. The Fahrenheit scale sets the freezing point of water at 32 degrees, while Celsius places it at 0 degrees, and Kelvin establishes its zero at absolute thermodynamic zero (−273.15°C). Consequently, converting between Celsius and Fahrenheit requires both a scale factor ($9/5$) and an affine shift (±32):

Precision, Repeating Decimals, and Floating-Point Rounding
While some conversions have exact terminating decimal equivalents—such as 1 inch defined precisely as 25.4 millimetres—many conversions between the imperial and metric systems generate repeating or irrational decimal sequences. For example, dividing yards into metres produces fractions that cannot be represented in a finite decimal sequence without rounding.
Modern web browsers compute numbers using IEEE-754 double-precision 64-bit floating point arithmetic. To keep output readable for everyday planning, cooking, and workshop estimates, results are formatted with significant-digit rounding rather than displaying sixty decimal places. When working with micro-scale laboratory calibrations or aerospace manufacturing, always verify against raw unrounded constants.
