What Makes a Generated Password Strong: Length vs. Variety
The mathematical resistance of any randomized credential against brute-force guessing is measured by information entropy (expressed in bits). Entropy is calculated using the total number of possible character symbols ($N$) raised to the power of the password length ($L$), resulting in the total search space $N^L$.
While adding uppercase letters, digits, and punctuation increases the pool size from 26 to 94 characters, increasing length provides an exponential increase in security. A 16-character alphanumeric password offers dramatically greater combinatorial complexity than an 8-character password crammed with complex symbols. No password should ever be considered "permanently unhackable," but adequate length pushes brute-force feasibility far beyond practical computing bounds.

How ScanPDF Generates and Handles Passwords
When you click "Generate Password," your browser sends your configuration preferences (length, uppercase, number, and symbol toggles) over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our backend service.
The backend uses Python's built-in secrets module, which taps directly into the operating system's kernel-level cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator (CSPRNG). Unlike standard pseudo-random generators, CSPRNG sources are non-deterministic and safe for cryptographic secrets.
Zero Persistence: The generated password is transmitted back in the API response payload and is immediately evicted from server memory. ScanPDF does not record, log, or store generated passwords in any database, cache, or tracking service.
Practical Password Hygiene Guidelines
A strong password is only effective when paired with disciplined credential management practices.
Eliminate Password Reuse
If an obscure website suffers a database breach, automated "credential stuffing" bots immediately try your leaked email/password pair on major services.
Use a Password Manager
Humans cannot reliably memorize dozens of unique 16-character keys. Use a reputable end-to-end encrypted password manager to store and auto-fill them.
Avoid Predictable Leetspeak
Substituting 'P@ssw0rd!' or appending '123!' is already codified into standard hacker dictionary rule sets. Pure algorithmic randomness is vastly superior.
Enable Multi-Factor (MFA)
Always activate two-factor authentication (preferring authenticator apps or FIDO2 hardware keys over SMS) for critical email, financial, and cloud accounts.
