How to Convert PDF to MOBI

Follow three simple steps to prepare your PDF documents for older Kindle e-readers and Mobipocket devices.

1

Upload PDF File

Select or drop a standard PDF document up to 100MB. Encrypted or password-protected files must be unlocked first.

2

Calibre Compilation

Our backend uses Calibre's ebook-convert pipeline to extract text flow, headings, and images into PalmDOC compressed MOBI records.

3

Download .MOBI File

Instantly stream your validated .mobi output. Zero files are kept in persistent disk storage after download.

Technical Overview: PDF vs. MOBI

Understanding formatting nuances when transforming fixed-layout prints into reflowable PalmDOC e-books.

Fixed Layout vs. Reflowable Flow

PDF files use absolute 2D coordinate spaces with rigid page boundaries, explicit line breaks, and fixed bounding boxes. Conversely, MOBI uses a reflowable markup model where font size and margins adjust dynamically to e-reader screens. During conversion, Calibre applies text-flow heuristics to reconstruct paragraphs, but complex multi-column magazines and math tables may require manual adjustment.

Legacy Kindle Compatibility

MOBI is a legacy Amazon format originally designed for Mobipocket Reader and 1st-to-4th generation Kindles. While modern Kindles primarily favor AZW3 (KF8) or EPUB via "Send to Kindle", legacy MOBI remains essential for older e-ink devices, sideloading over USB, and legacy reading hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PDF to MOBI support scanned documents?

No. Conversion extracts embedded digital text streams. Scanned PDFs containing only bitmap images without an underlying OCR text layer will yield pages with images but no selectable, reflowable text.

Are my uploaded PDF documents saved on the server?

Never. ScanPDF enforces a strict zero-persistence policy. Files are processed in isolated memory/temporary directories and immediately purged from disk once the download finishes.

Should I use MOBI or AZW3 for my Kindle?

If you use a modern Kindle (Paperwhite, Oasis, Scribe, or 5th Gen onwards), AZW3 is strongly recommended due to its rich CSS3 support and superior typography. MOBI is best suited for vintage Kindles and legacy e-ink readers.
