Merge Engine Boundaries & Behavior
To set accurate expectations, ScanPDF discloses how specialized PDF objects and document properties are handled during automated merging:
Password-Protected PDFs
PDFs encrypted with user or permissions passwords cannot be parsed by the merge pipeline. Remove password restrictions before uploading.
Digital Signatures
Joining PDF files modifies document byte structures. Cryptographically sealed digital signatures will be invalidated by the merge operation.
Mixed Page Geometries
Each file retains its independent MediaBox and CropBox. You can combine portrait A4, landscape Letter, and oversized pages without stretching.
Technical Questions & Answers
Verified answers regarding PDF file merging mechanics.
Will merging multiple PDFs distort different page sizes (like mixing A4 and US Letter)?
No. ScanPDF's merge engine handles each document independently. A landscape presentation slide or US Letter page placed next to an A4 document maintains its native dimensions, orientation, and resolution without forced scaling.
What happens to interactive bookmarks and tables of contents?
Page content and internal vector streams are joined in sequence. Internal relative hyperlinks remain functional, but complex external cross-document link trees may need to be regenerated in your final combined PDF.
Can I merge password-protected or digitally signed PDF files?
Files protected with open or permission passwords cannot be processed until unlocked. Furthermore, merging alters the byte structure of the documents, which will invalidate any cryptographic digital signature applied to an individual source file.
Is there a limit on how many PDF files or pages I can combine?
You can merge multiple PDFs as long as the total upload payload stays within the 50MB per-request ceiling. For optimal performance with dozens of files, ensure individual files are clean and standard-compliant.
